 #707 :The Express Train




Let’s get started!
 Why didn’t someone tell me that there is an express train from Kamioooka to Gumyoji??  So many times I have jumped on the subway just to end up in Kannai.  When I get off the train, I have that look on my face that so many foreigners in Japan have that says “どこここ？？？” I feel so foolish as I casually walk around to the other train that heads back to Gumyoji.
Recently, I just take Keikyu from Kamioooka instead. It is only a 10 minute walk, and I enjoy going through the shopping arcade. 

Today’s pronunciation practice:
John: I want to do something special, and I was hoping you guys could be a part of it. Here’s the deal. I’m writing a song, and I was hoping we could all play it together.
Jack: OK. I wanna sing.
John: You can’t sing. I was hoping you would play the guitar.
Mai: Well, I can sing.
Jack: I was hoping you would play the guitar.
Mai: How am I gonna do that? I don’t have any arms.
John: Ok, Ok, Ok, let’s all sing together…..

なぜ今まで誰も上大岡から弘明寺まで急行列車があることを教えてくれなかったのだろう。乗り換えて飛び乗った地下鉄で何度関内まで行ってしまったことか。電車を降りた時の私といったら「どこここ？？？」といった、よくある日本の外国人の表情だ。 そんな自分があまりにも愚かに思えるのだが、弘明寺に戻る反対車線には何ごともなかったかのように歩く。
最近では上大岡から弘明寺まで、地下鉄ではなく、京急を利用している。そして駅から商店街を通る10分程の歩きを楽しんでいる。

706# :The Heavy Box


Let’s get started!

The other day I saw an old, old, old, old lady pulling herself up the stairs at the station using the handrail. The look on her face reminded me of the way I look after running 10k. I offered to help her, but she adamantly refused. I realized that she could have taken the elevator, but it was her choice to take the stairs. This was her way of staying strong, I suppose. 
When I was moving into my new classroom, a similar situation occurred. I had many deliveries, the heaviest of which were the table and shelves. The man who delivered them walked with a limp. He moved slowly, but he carried the heavy boxes in all by himself.  I offered to help carry them, but he also refused. 
I wonder if people like this had such a strong will when they were young and strong. In any case, they give me inspiration and taught me not to complain when things are hard.

Today’s Pronunciation Practice:

John: What are you working on?
Jack: Can’t talk. In the zone.
 
John: Do you know what he’s doing?
Mai: I don’t know…could be anything.
 
John: Uh, you want to take a break? Your food’s ready. Time to eat! Did you eat yet?
Mai: No, No, what are  you doing? He’s both happy and quiet. It’s like seeing a unicorn and Bigfoot at the same time.

先日私は大変お年をめした女性が手すりを使いながら駅の階段をやっとの様子で登っているのを見かけました。その辛そうな表情は私が10キロ、ランニングし終えた時のようで、思わず私は何かお手伝いできることがありますかと尋ねました。しかし彼女はきっぱりと私の申し出を断りました。彼女はエレベーターを使う事だって出来たはずだったと私も気づき、それでも彼女は階段を選んだのだと思いいたりました。おそらく、これが彼女の元気でいるためのやり方なのでしょう。
新しい教室への引っ越しの際にも同じようなことがありました。たくさんの宅配物の中で最も重かったのはテーブルと椅子だったのですが、それらを運び入れてくれた業者さんは脚が不自由のようでした。彼の動きは非常にゆっくりではありましたが、重たい箱を一つ残らず一人で運びこみました。私は運ぶのを手伝いましょうといいましたが、この時も断られました。いったいこのような人達は若くて力のあった頃にもこんな強い精神力をもっていたのでしょうか？いづれにせよ、彼等は私にある種の感銘を与え、同時に、辛い時でも泣き言を言わない事を私に教えてくれました。

#705 Flamingos




Let’s get started!
Flamingos are very interesting.  In my home state of Florida, there are many of them. Do you know why they are pink?  The color in their feathers comes from the food they eat! I  wonder what they would look like if they ate bananas, or broccoli? They can often be seen wading in the water.  To wade means to walk in shallow water. Another interesting fact about flamingos is that they are said to be monogamous.  That means that they are like people, and stay with the same partner. 
Recently, I read in the news that over 100,000 flamingos flocked to a lake in Mumbai.  Because of the coronavirus lockdown, there are not so many people outside, and the birds feel safe.  One of them got lost while flying from Miami and migrated to Japan!  Did you know that? She stays in Gumyoji now. Her name is Mai-chan! When you come to Miami, please take a photo with her. She likes people.

Today, I want to practice a little pronunciation. I will read a phrase and then give three examples. It is ok if you don’t understand the meaning because this is listening practice. Try to see if you can catch the phrase.

 1. Do you know what?
 - Do you know what you are going to do tomorrow?
- Do you know what is going to happen after that?
- Do you know what we are going to have for dinner?

 2. I want to do something
- I wanna study English more and more. 
- I want to go to Miami.
- I want to go out because I have cabin fever. 

 3. You want to
- What do you want to do tonight?
- Tell me where you want to go.
- If you want to speak English, you should go to Miami!

フラミンゴには大変興味深いはなしがあります。私の出身地、フロリダ州にはたくさんのフラミンゴがいます。皆さんはフラミンゴが何故ピンク色なのかご存知ですか？なんと、あの羽の色は彼らの食する物に由来しているのです! 彼らがバナナやブロッコリーを食べたらどんな色になるんだろうと思ったりします。水の中を歩いているのもよく見かけます。to wade とは浅瀬を歩く事です。また他にも興味深い事があります。フラミンゴはmonogamous モノガマスだと言われています。monogamousとは人のように、同じパートナーと連れ添う一夫一妻の事です。
最近１０万羽以上ものフラミンゴがムンバイの湖に群れをなしているというニュースを読みました。コロナウィルスで都市封鎖され、屋外の人々の数が激減したことが鳥たちに安心感をもたらしているようです。そのうちの１羽がマイアミからの飛行中、迷子になり 日本に移住したんですって！ご存知でしたか？彼女は今弘明寺にいます。彼女の名前はマイちゃんです。マイアミにきたら、ぜひ彼女と一緒に写真を撮って下さい。彼女は人が好きです。

今日は少し発音の練習をしたいとおもいます。まず私が１つフレーズを言います。続いて例文を３つ読みます。意味がとれなくても構いません。これはリスニングの練習ですから。このはじめのフレーズが聞き取れるかどうか試してみてください。
