Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Nagasawa Christmas Party

I'm back! Lately, I have been so crazy busy and I haven't had time to write in my blog.

The other day, we had so much fun at my Nagasawa class! In the class, the children learned Christmas words and sang some songs. After the class, Santa Claus came by!Everyone was suprised! But Santa is a little fat, isn't he? I'm glad that I'm slim! After Santa came in and said hello to everyone, the children went up to him one-by-one and told him what they wanted for Christmas. After that, all the children took a picture together with Santa. It was so much fun!

Presents under the tree

Put up a Christmas tree

Did you put up a Christmas tree? In America, before Christmas many presents from family and friends are placed under the tree. As a result, by Christmas Eve there are many presents. Until that time, everyday when I see a present, I wonder what's inside and I wait in anticipation for Christmas.

This year I didn't put up a Christmas tree. I wonder if I'm becoming an old Scrooge.

This year was supossed to be an unlucky year because of my age, but it wasn`t so bad. I visited a temple during the beginning of the year and prayed nothing bad would happen to my family. Then I bought a good-luck charm to protect against evil.

March 4th was my birthday. I got a bracelet from my sweet husband. We went to Yamanaka Lake for a short trip. It started to snow the day before, and I was worried that if it continued snowing, we would have had to cancel because we didn`t have snow tires. If we would have cancelled, then we would have went a week later, when the big earthquake happened.  Luckily, it stopped, so we went and had fun.

After we came back, a few days later, the big Tohoku earthquake happened. I think I was lucky that it didn`t happen on the day of my trip. Perhaps it was because I bought the good-luck charm.

My best memory of 2011 is going to Arashi`s big event.  I really love Arashi so much and I am a big fan.  But they were so far from my seat, they looked like little matchsticks dancing around on the stage.

My worst memory of 2011 is that I couldn`t go to Arashi`s concert.  So many people wanted to go,  so they had a lottery to let people buy tickets.  I drew a losing ticket so I couldn`t go to their concert. I will try again next year.

Don't be a Grinch!

Before, I wrote about Scrooge on this blog. When someone is stingy, they are called a scrooge. And when someone hates Christmas, they are called a "Grinch". The Grinch is a character in a cartoon that hates Christmas so much, that he steals everyone's presents and Christmas trees in order to stop it.

So, the next time you see someone who seems to hate Christmas, for example, if someone says "I don't like Christmas, so I don't want to go to any Christmas parties", you should say to that person "Don't be a Grinch! "

Ho! Ho! Ho!

これのYou TubeビデオはA Christmas Storyのです。

When I was a child, I made a list of the things I wanted for Christmas. Since Santa was always at the shopping mall before Christmas, Iooked forward to going to see him and tell him what I wanted. But Santa was so fat and had strange clothes, and I was so nervous that I forgot what I wanted to say! There were children who were crying, too.

This You Tube video is from "A Christmas Story". That movie is so funny. Whenever I watch it, I am reminded of my own childhood days.

Secret Santa

In America, every year instead of an end-of-the-year party, there is a Christmas party. Everyone needs to buy a present for the party. A price is decided on in advance, and everyone buys a present below that price and brings it to the party. Once they arrive at the party, all the presents are gathered and placed on one table. A number is written on the present, and the same number is written on a piece of paper and put into a hat. Later, everyone takes a number from the hat and recieves a present with the same number. Because nobody knows who the present they got is from, it is called "Secret Santa". Sometimes people get a nice present, and sometimes people get one that's not so great, and sometimes people get fruitcake as a present. I don't know why, but nobody wants the fruitcake.

Our New House

On December 1st, I bought a new house. It was the most expensive thing that I have ever bought in my life. It is located near Konan Chuo Station. It is one stop away from Kamioooka Station by subway. My new house is about a 10 minute walk from the station. However, it is a 20 minute walk from Kamioooka station. There are no hills, so it is an easy walk.

I feel a little anxious about buying such an expensive house, but I am really looking forward to living there with my family.

It hasn`t been built yet.  It will be completed around next August. It will have a living room, kitchen, 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and a walk-in closet. The living room faces to the south, so we can get a lot of sunlight inside. That is very important to me.  It also has a driveway for two cars.

Don't be a Scrooge!

りんしょくか- miser(マイザー)

けち- stingy(スティンジー)

In the movie "A Christmas Carol", there is a miser whose name is Scrooge. Even though Scrooge is rich, he is a stingy old man. Furthermore, Scrooge hates Christmas!

At Christmas time, if there is a person who doesn't like Christmas, or is stingy, we say to that person, "Don't be a Scrooge! ". It means "Don't be so stingy!"or "Get in the Christmas spirit!"

Do you know anyone like Scrooge?

My trip to Hawaii

Last Saturday I went to Hawaii with my friend. On that day, it was raining so hard! It was terrible! I walked from my house to the train station, and I got soaked!  My luggage was ok, though. Luckily, my clothes dried while I was riding on the train. It took 50 minutes by train to the airport.

It was my first time to go to Haneda airport. The new international terminal is very nice. There are many nice shops. I met my friend at the airport.

On the plane, I watched 2 movies and slept.  It took about 7 hours to get to Hawaii. When I first arrived, the first thing I noticed was that there are so many Japanese in Hawaii!  The travel agency took my bags straight to my hotel, and I took a bus with my friend to the Duty-free shop in Waikiki.

I did a lot of shopping and sightseeing.  I went to the Dole Pineapple Factory, the North Shore, Diamond Head, and I saw the King  Kamehameha statue. I wanted to go to the castle, but it was closed. I most enjoyed the pineapple factory. I saw so many pineapples, red ones, green ones, and yellow ones.

I enjoyed the beach so much! I went para-sailing, and it was really great! When I went up into the sky, I had a really nice view of the ocean and Diamond Head. I also went jet-skiing. It was very thrilling, but my friend was a bad driver. I`m a good driver!   Later, I climbed Diamond Head with my friend. It took 30 minutes!!!  I was so tired!  I hate climbing!  Even though I hate climbing, I did it because I wanted to see the sunrise.

I enjoyed Hawaii very much, but I don`t like hawaiian food because like most American food, the taste is too strong.

My Trip to Guam

I went to Guam last week with my wife, my kids, and my parents. We stayed in Guam for four days.  This was my first time visiting Guam. My parents are getting old, so I wanted to take them on a vacation to spend time with them. On the plane, my son started to cry. He is only 2 years old. So, I let him watch Anpan Man videos on my I-phone, and he stopped crying. When I arrived in Guam, I noticed how hot it was. I also noticed that the clouds in the sky seemed to move more quickly than in Japan. I wondered if it was because the wind is much stronger in Guam.

We stayed at the Guam Plaza Hotel. It was nice and clean, and the location was very convenient because it was near the beach and the shopping area. I noticed there were many other Japanese in Guam.

While we were in Guam, we visited the beach, but my kids didn`t like it there. Maybe if they were older, they would enjoy it more. We also visited many sightseeing spots.  My favorite was Two Lovers Point. It is on the top of a cliff overlooking the city. The view was great!

I had one problem while I was in Guam.  I planned to go on a dolphin-watching cruise with my family. We were really looking forward to it. However, when we got to the pier, we were told that the boat`s engine was broken so we couldn`t go.  We were so disappointed, but there was nothing we could do.

We enjoyed spending time together in Guam. We want to go there again when my kids are older.

Almost Turkey Day!

Soon, it will be the American holiday, Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is always on the last Thursday of November every year. On that day, everyone celebrates by eating turkey. Did you know that there are two kinds of meat? There is white and dark meat. If you have ever been to Subway, then you have probably seen white meat in their sandwiches. Compared with dark meat, white meat doesn't have as much fat, so it is healthier. However, since their is more oil and fat in dark meat, it's tastier!

Since everyody eats turkey on Thanksgiving, it is also called Turkey Day!

Last week I went to the Yokohama Athletic Field with my 2 kids. It is 1.2 kilometers from Tsukushino station on the Denentoshi line. The Athletic Field has a fun obstacle course for children and adults.

The obstacle course has 50 obstacles, and is divided into 4 stages.  The first stage is an easy course for warming up. You have to walk across stumps, a rope bridge, and a rope net. There are about 12 or 13 obstacles in the first stage.   The second stage is more difficult than the first stage. It is a water course. You have to ride in a big bucket and row for about 10 meters. After that, you walk across a suspension bridge over the water. If you make a mistake, you will fall into the water! There are about 8 to 10 obstacles in the second stage.   Next is the third stage. The third stage is the same as the first stage, but it is harder and more difficult. It has higher and more unstable obstacles.  Lastly, there is the fourth stage.  There is a big hole called "Ant Hell".  It is called "Ant Hell" because it is easy to get in, but difficult to climb out.  You climb down into the hole with a rope, but you have to escape by running up the slippery walls.

I think everyone can enjoy this place and have fun!

On time, in time

質問があるんだけど、on time とin time はどう違うの? I will be on time とI will be in time

Yes! Ms. Y is mostly correct in her own answer!

▲On time

Means you are personally involved, for a meeting, class, or if you want to stress the point of something not being late.

◇The bus was on time.(it was not late)

◇I was on time for the movie(i was not late)

◇She is always on time for our dates! (She is never late)

▲In time

Means that because you are not late, you can have a chance.

◇I made it in time for the movie. (So i could have the chance to watch it)

◇i prepared the presentation in time for the meeting (so i could use it)

◇The police arrived in time to catch the thief. (They could have a chance to catch him)

★sometimes you can add "just".

Or it could mean "at exactly the right moment, not late"

-I made it just in time to catch the train!

-i arrived just in time to catch my girlfriend kissing another man!ι(`ロ´)ノ

In many instances, it may be ok to use "in time" or "on time", but the nuance is a little different.

It is difficult to translate "発表会". In English, depending on the situation, there are various words you can use. Today, I began preparing my kindergarten class for this year's happyoukai. At the happyoukai, the children will be singing and playing instruments, so I think it can be called a "concert".

Getting to know my students

Sometimes when I sit across the table from my students, it is very difficult for me to find the best way to help them. Usually I begin with some very basic conversation to find their level. From there, I can decide if they need to use a book, or if they can begin practicing regular conversation. Many people want to jump right into conversation, but it is difficult if they lack the basics. Sometimes it is also difficult to get into conversation with someone whom I have not shared one single experience other than sipping coffee together.

However, with time I can usually somehow manage to break through the walls that separate strangers and when that happens, then real conversation can begin. I enjoy the fact that I can learn many things from my students while at the same time teaching them English.

Where's Mommy?

https://market.android.com/details?id=me.wheresmom

This week's recommended Andrord app is a flashcard game. While children listen to the word, they try to choose the correct one from 12 pictures on the screen. Also, you can make your own cards using your camera. I often use this app when I have lessons with children, and they are happy studying English.

Halloween Costume

I`m wondering what kind of costume I will wear this year for Halloween.  Last year I was Batman.

The kids liked it. The year before last I was a ghost, but it was too scary and all the children cried. Even an old lady in the neighborhood scolded me!

I wonder what I will become this year!  When I was I child, I was Batman, Spiderman, and Superman, but I liked Spiderman the best!

I want to find a cheap and cute costume.
