4/27 #675 Golden Week

クラスありますよー😀

 ブログを聞きましょう。

Today's phrase:

On second thought...
- We use this expression to say that we have changed our mind about something.

Example:
1. I was thinking about going to McDonald's for lunch, but on second thought I will go to Matsuya.
2. Let's watch TV. On second thought, we should study English.
3. I'm thinking about going on a diet. On second thought, I will run a marathon instead.

Golden Week
It has finally arrived.  Perhaps many people are happy to finally take some time off from work.  I have seen many posters on the train and here and there advertising trips and tours for Golden Week.  I was thinking about taking a trip somewhere, perhaps to Hakone.  It would be nice to relax in the hot springs for a while. On second thought, I think I will just stay home and work.  For me, this is a good opportunity to catch up on a lot of things I haven't been able to do because I have been so busy.  Hopefully, my office at Starbucks won't be too crowded.

How about you? What are your plans for Golden Week?  Please leave a comment and let me know your plans. Oh,I just remembered. There is one thing I do want to do and that is to watch the new Avengers movie. I am a huge Marvel nerd. I like Marvel almost as much as Star Wars.
Have a safe and happy Golden Week!

Challenge Time!
1. What did I decide to do for Golden Week?
2. What has finally arrived?
3. Where would be a nice place to relax?

New words & phrases:

Lighten Up
We use this expression to tell somebody to take a more positive attitude. Usually this is when you are annoyed by somebody being negative.

Example:
1. I know your girlfriend left you, but lighten up. There are plenty of fish in the sea.
2. I wish you would just lighten up. You are always complaining about your boyfriend.
3. Lighten up.  When you are down, there is nowhere to go but up.

Blue
What comes to mind when I say the word "blue"?  I think of sadness. In English, if you are feeling down, you can say, 'I have the blues".  The rain, tears, dark clouds, and the deep ocean all come to mind.  There is also a genre of music called "The Blues".
I wonder why the color blue is associated with sadness. Why not the color green?  People could say "I have the greens", or "I enjoy listening to the greens". Today's weather is making me feel green! ha ha I need to lighten up!

Challenge Time!
1. What is the name of a popular genre of music?
2. What is the color of sadness?
3. What can you say to someone who is down?

New phrase:

to tune someone out - this means to stop listening or paying attention to someone who is speaking.

Example:
  1. I didn't like math. In class, I often tuned my teacher out and started drawing on my paper.
  2. The child didn't listen to his mother. All he could do was tune her out while thinking about Star Wars.
  3. Many people said he couldn't do it, but he tuned them out and did his best.

Radio

I remember when I was young, I used to listen to the radio. There were only about 6 stations you could tune in to. There were 2 country stations, 2 rock stations, 1 oldies station, and 1 R&B station. All those stations played music only.
If you wanted talk radio, you had listen to AM radio. However, in the mornings many radio stations had talk shows for people on their morning commute. I was never interested in those talk shows and just tuned them out. I think Japanese radio has more talk than music.  We have an AM station called NPR (National Public Radio) which is similar to NHK. These days, I never listen to the radio anymore. Does anyone?

Thank-you for checking out my blog. If you have any friends, please tell them about it!

Leave a comment and have a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful day!

Challenge Time!

1. How many radio stations were there?

2. What’s the difference between Japanese radio and radio in the U.S.?

3. Did I enjoy listening to the morning talk shows?

 ブログを聞きましょう.

New words & phrases:

To stumble upon something
- to find something by chance while doing something

Example:
  1. I stumbled on some money while I was cleaning the bookshelf.
  2. I stumbled on the Miami homepage while searching the internet for good eikaiwa schools.
  3. I was searching through my old photographs, when I stumbled across one with me and Chuck Norris.
How to color easter eggs

I was so busy yesterday that it completely slipped my mind that it was Easter. I think I may have written about this before in my blog, but I want to write about it again because thinking about Easter brings back many happy memories of my childhood.

My mother would start preparing for Easter two days before by boiling the eggs. I think maybe about 12. After boiling them, we had to wait for them to cool.  In the meantime, we prepared several cups of water with food coloring. I think the colors were red, green, blue, and yellow. When the eggs were ready, we drew designs on the eggs with white wax crayons.  Then, we dipped the eggs in the cups with food coloring using a wire dipper.  The water colored the eggs except for the part that we drew on with the wax crayons.

On Easter, after going to church, we would have an Easter egg hunt at home. Our parents would hide the eggs. It was so exciting. My brother and I would frantically search for the eggs. However sometimes later in the summer, while I was outside playing, I would stumble on an egg hidden somewhere that we forgot to look.  I showed it to my mother and we all had a big laugh.

Challenge Time!

1. What was the first step in preparing for Easter?
2. What did we use to make designs on the eggs?
3. How many color eggs were there?

Examples:
  1.  The English test today was so easy. It was a piece of cake.
  2.  If you have a smartphone, then travelling around Tokyo is a piece of cake.
  3.  Kanji is so difficult for me, but for Japanese people it is a piece of cake.
Queen

It seems that everyone has fallen in love with Queen lately because of their recent movie. I remember when I was in high school, there was a movie called "Wayne's World".  The theme song for the movie was "Bohemian Rhapsody. The main actor is Mike Myers. He also appeared in the recent Queen movie. Wayne's World was so funny, and I fell in love with the song.  Another famous movie with a song by Queen is "Flash Gordon", also a favorite movie of mine.

When I go to karaoke, I sometimes try to sing Queen songs. It is so difficult for me to sing both the high and low parts, but I am sure that singing was a piece of cake for Freddy. One of my favorite Queen songs is "A Crazy Little Thing Called Love".

Attention to Detail
A big part of Navy bootcamp was learning to pay attention to detail. It was very difficult at first. For example we had to fold our clothes and put them on the shelf with the corners aligned perfectly. If they were off even 1cm, the drill instructor would get angry and throw your clothes across the room. The same went with our bed sheets. They had to be pulled tight and the corners had to be folded a certain way. If there was even one wrinkle, the drill instructor would yank off all your bed sheets and make you do it again.  I remember one day when we came back from lunch, everyone's clothes and bed sheets were thrown around the room. It looked like a tornado had been in our room.  We had 5 minutes to clean it up.

Peachy
How are you today? I'm just peachy. It means "I'm fine".  Some people say "peachy keen". Speaking of peaches, do you know what state in the U.S. is famous for peaches?
It's Georgia. Maybe you think of coffee when you hear the word Georgia, but I think of peaches. When I was a child and lived in Virginia, we would drive down to Alabama from time to time to meet my grandparents.  On the way, we would pass through Georgia and make sure to pick up some delicious peaches. They were so big and juicy.  I couldn't wait to eat mine, so I bit into it and ate it without even peeling it.

A fat guy and a girl with pink hair
I think someday I may write a book about riding the train. There are always so many interesting things about it.  Today, during my morning commute, there is a fat guy sitting across from me. No, not just fat but really huge. He must be a sumo wrestler. He is taking up 3 seats!  Other people get on the train and think they found an empty seat just to find that a big fat man is sitting there.  Sometimes people are rude and take up lots of space when they sit on the train. In that situation, you can ask them to move over, but what can you say to a fat guy? Stop being fat?

A few seats down from him there is a girl with pink hair. I can see that the girl sitting next to her is becoming irritated because the girl with pink hair keeps pushing her elbows into her as she does her smartphone.

There is a bee on the floor. It is crawling around.  People walk over and around it. I think no one noticed it but me. It hasn't gotten smooshed....yet.

What to wear
This time of year it is always difficult to decide what to wear.  I wear my usual coat because it is chilly outside, but then I get hot on the train.  It is quite cool in the morning and late evening, but gets hot during the day.  I notice many people on the train seem to have the same feeling.  I see some people who are wearing their heavy winter jackets and some who don't have a jacket at all. I wish the weather would make up its mind!

New words & phrases:
  1. accumulate

A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss

Have you heard of this phrase? I had thought that this was a positive phrase. I thought it meant that as long as you stay busy and keep active, you won't accumulate bad habits, bad health, or other bad things. For example, a person who is not working accumulates debt and bad habits. A person who doesn't exercise accumulates bad health conditions. A person who doesn't study accumulates bad mental conditions. I thought.

However, I just found that the real meaning is quite different, and is actually a negative one! It actually means that a person who doesn't have a steady job and keeps moving from place to place is free from worry, cares, and responsibilities.

I am disappointed.

On a positive note, there is now a Rolling Stones Exhibit in Tokyo. You can read about it here.

Banana or Cookie?

This morning the coffee shop was empty. There were fewer people than usual. Perhaps because it is Sunday. The manager greeted me as he always does with his half-hearted smile. "Hello, John. It's nice to see you again. It seems like it's going to be a wonderful, wonderful day. Are you you working today?" "Yes", I replied.  "If I weren't working, I'd still be sleeping and miss this beautiful morning".
He then turned around, grabbed something and then turned back towards me with something yellow in his hand. "How about a delicious banana? It has a magnificent shape, and it's color matches the morning sunlight". I said no thank-you. When he asked why I said, "Well, a cookie has the shape of the sun and there is no peel to throw away at the end.

Man delays train
Did you hear the news? A man in Nagoya stopped a train from leaving the platform. When the doors were about to close, he stuck his hand out so that they couldn't. The doors opened and tried to close again. He stuck his hand out again. He did this many times. A station attendant tried to get him to put his hand inside the train, but he wouldn't stop. Even one of the other passengers tried to get him to stop. I wonder what was wrong with him? Was he drunk?  The video has gone viral.

The big news in Japan recently is the new design that is going to be on Japanese currency. I think they are really cool. If I were a foreigner visiting Japan, I would take some back to the U.S. for souvenirs. The only thing that is a little strange to me is the empty space in the middle.  I have heard that the purpose is to prevent counterfeit money by having a watermark, but these days watermarks can be copied too.  U.S. currency has holograms, which are more difficult to counterfeit.  Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing the new bills.  I think I will start a new hobby...collecting money. ha ha

First Time to Japan
I remember the first time I came to Japan. It was in April of 1998. It seems like yesterday.  The cherry blossoms had just come out. It was my first time to see them as there are no cherry blossoms in my hometown. I was so excited to be here. It was also my first time outside of the U.S. I felt like I was on a different planet. Everything was so different and interesting.

I remember the first time I visited Yokohama. I went to the Hard Rock Cafe in Landmark Tower.  I wasn't accustomed to eating Japanese food yet, so I wanted a good old-fashioned HAMBURGER!  I love Hard Rock. They have lots of memorabilia from famous musicians on the walls. If you have never been there, you should check it out!

Although I have gotten used to many things in Japan, I am still excited to be here because I am still seeing, eating, learning, and experiencing new things. I feel lucky to be in Japan.

頑張ります
I like this word. I think there is no one word with the same meaning in English. Perhaps the best way to say this in English would be "I'll do my best". But in my opinion, 頑張ります has a much stronger meaning.  It is more like "I will give it everything I have."  In my country, people like to say "I'll try". However, the feeling is that the person will do it with 70% effort.  For example, if someone invites you to a party, but you don't really want to go, you can say "I'm busy, but I'll try." Then, it is ok if you don't show up.  One of my favorite lines from Star Wars is from Yoda. He said, "Do or do not; there is no try".

Reiwa
I think it is cool that Japanese people have their own calendar system.  The name Reiwa seems to be a very harmonious and beautiful name.  I looked it up in the dictionary. The kanji "Rei" is commonly known as "command" or "order", but can also mean "auspicious" or "good".  I find it interesting that the kanji has two meanings.  I wonder if this is why Japanese people are so orderly and good at cooperation and following rules.  Perhaps it is because it is synonymous with "good".  Following the rules = good.  How nice!

Of course, the second kanji means "harmony" or "peace". So,  "令和” seems to mean orderly and harmonious.  I like it.

Fun Seminar!

As you know, I had a seminar the other day on "How to Learn English".  I am pretty much used to speaking in front of groups of people since I have been a teacher for many years. However, I was very nervous about speaking Japanese in front of everyone.

One time, I was the MC for a big event for the Kounan International Lounge. However, that time I just read the Japanese from a paper, so I could manage to do it.

This time, I had to speak Japanese freely without reading from a paper.  Since the attendees were students of different levels, I thought I should give the seminar mostly in Japanese so that everyone could understand.

I was worried if everyone could understand
my Japanese, so before the seminar I studied harder than ever before. I used much of my own advice which I was teaching in the seminar. In the end, I think the seminar turned out great. Thank-you to everyone who came.
