When I was in middle school, my family lived in a nice house. It had 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a dining room, kitchen, living room, and a garage. But, I think the size of the house is not as important as the feeling that it is home.  The pictures and paintings on the wall, the style of the decorations, and the little things that shows one’s hobbies lying around. For example, if you visit someone’s house who is really into Elvis Presley, you might find photos of Elvis, dvd’s and maybe even a guitar.  I like visiting people’s homes and finding out who they really are. The inside of every house is different and reflects a person’s character and personality. DIY home improvement projects are popular, and everyone enjoys adding their own personal touch to their house to make it into their home.

Everyone knows that American furniture is big and heavy.  There is also a lot. In the living room, there is a big sofa and a love seat. A love seat is like a sofa, but smaller. Only 2 people can sit in it.  There is also a coffee table and end tables at the ends of the sofa. You also need a TV stand for your TV. Usually people have a big shelf to put your TV, stereo, video games, DVD's, CD’s, etc.  It is called an “entertainment center”. Additionally, people typically have bookshelves, cabinets and other chairs and furniture. My father had a big chair called a “lazy boy”. It was actually a reclining chair, but it was so comfortable, it made you feel “lazy”.  I think living rooms in American houses are so very comfortable.
“If you're a couch potato, you most likely spend lots of time in your living room. You can also call a living room a lounge, a sitting room, a front room, or a parlor. It's distinguished from other rooms in a house by what it's used for.”

は誰もが知っています。また、その数は

ファーとラブチェア(love seat)がありま
す。love seatとは小型のソファーのよう
なもので二人しか座れません。

テレビ用にテレビ台も必要です。
一般的には、テレビ、ステレオ、ビデオ
ゲーム、DVD、CDなどを収める大きな棚
が置かれています。それはエンターテイ
メントセンターと呼ばれています。
さらに加えると、大概、本棚やキャビ
ネット、椅子といった家具がおいてあり
ます。
かつて家には父用の大きな椅子があり、
”lazy boy”(怠け坊主)とよんでいました。
実際その椅子は誰もがlazyな気分になっ
てしまうほど心地の良い椅子でした。
アメリカの家庭の居間は大変心地よい場
所になっているとおもいます。
“ もしあなたがカウチポテトなら多くの
時間をliving room (居間)で過ごすことに
なるでしょう。living room はlounge ,
sitting room , front room あるいはparlor
などと呼ばれることもあります。
居間は何のために使われるかによって家
の中の他の部屋とはっきり区別されてい
るのです。

Houses in the U.S. are very different from Japanese houses. Of course, they are much bigger, but there are some other differences as well. First, let’s start with the front door. In front of the door, there is always a porch. On the porch, there is always a welcome mat. There is no intercom system like Japanese houses have. I remember many times, I had to look through the peephole in the door to see who it was. The door is different from Japanese homes. It opens to the inside. That means you have to push the door to enter, not pull. I think Japanese doors open to the outside because there are many shoes in the genkan. If you push the door inside a Japanese house, the shoes will be in the way. Usually, there is no genkan in American homes. There is a lack of privacy because when you open the front door, you can see inside the living room very clearly. Sometimes, there is a small area inside the front door called a foyer. Where do you think American people put their shoes? Usually in the closet in the bedroom. Finally, the front door in American homes usually have 2 or 3 heavy locks.

見渡せてしまうので”プライバシーの欠
如”ともなります。たまに入り口のところ
にfoyer(玄関ホール) と呼ばれるちょっと
したスペースがある場合があります。
アメリカ人は靴をどこに置いていると思
いますか？寝室のクローゼットの中で
す。最後に、アメリカの家庭の玄関ドア
には、二つないしは三つの厳重な鍵がつ
います。

When I was a child, I always had a “bowl cut”. That means my bangs were cut straight across my forehead. Then when I was in the 5th grade, I did something bad, and my father made me shave my head. I was very embarrassed at first, but I got used to it. In high school, I started listening to heavy metal music and I let my hair grow out past my shoulders. My mom always complained about it. Then when I started college I had my heavy metal hair-do cut short except for one long braid in the back. At the time, it was in fashion. It was called a “rat-tail”. I cut it off eventually, and then had a normal boy’s hairstyle until I joined the Navy and got a crew cut. Sometimes I think if I didn’t have a job I would grow my hair and beard out like a wild caveman, lol. How about you? Why don’t you try something different?

子供の頃、私はずっとマッシュルームカットでした。つまり前髪は額にそって真っ直ぐにカットされていました。その後、小学5年の時、何か悪いことをしたので、父は私を坊主頭にさせました。最初のうちはとても恥ずかしかったのですが、それにも慣れていきました。高校時代にはヘビメタ音楽を聴くようになっていて、私は髪を肩まで伸ばすようになりました。母はいつもそれをこぼしていました。大学に入ると、ヘビメタのショートカット、一本だけ長い三つ編を後ろに垂らした髪形になりました。当時の流行でした。それはネズミのしっぽとよばれていました。最終的ににはそのしっぽも切り離し、ネイビーに入隊するまでは普通の男子のヘアースタイルで、そして、短い角刈り、クルーカットになりました。もし今、仕事に就いていなかったら、石器時代の穴居人のように髪も髭ものばしているだろうななんて思うことがあります。(笑) 皆さんはどうですか？時には髪型を変えてみるなんていうのはどうでしょう？

There is a popular proverb in English that says “You can judge a man by the shoes he wears.” I have my own proverb, “You can judge a person by their hairstyle.” Here’s a list of my own interpretations of hairstyles:

1. Bangs are too long. - I think people with long bangs are very shy because they are attempting to cover their eyes.

2. The comb-over - This is when men use hair from the sides of their head to try to cover their baldness, for example; TRUMP. I think this shows insecurity and weakness.

3. The bald man with neatly trimmed hair on the sides of his head - I think this shows that a man is very strong and secure. I have heard that many women are attracted to this type of man.

4. Spiky hair- artistic and unique

5. Short, typical business-like hairstyle - someone who is conservative and is not into fashion, nor is very creative.

There are many more that I can think of, but what do you think? Do you agree? What does your hairstyle say about YOU?

英語でよく言われる諺に「はいてる靴をみればその人が分かる」があります。私には自作の諺があります。「髪型で人がわかる」です。私の髪型判断リストをここに挙げてみましょう。

1.前髪がとても長い-私は前髪の長い人はとてもシャイなのだと思います。なぜなら目を覆うようとしているので。

3. Blog Topic: Hairstyles Pt.1


Some people have the same hairstyles their whole life. Me, I like to change mine week to week. I don’t really do it on purpose. As my hair grows out, it seems to naturally create a new style. It seems like my hair decides its own style, ha ha. It also depends on the weather. The humidity makes my hair more wavy, and so I must style it a different way from usual. After taking a shower, I usually towel-dry my hair, then go get dressed and come back and blow dry it a little bit. Then it is GATSBY time! I have a tower of GATSBY hair wax in my bathroom, lol. I apply the hair wax to my hair, and viola! I have a new hairstyle! How about you? Leave a comment and tell me how you style your hair!

はないのですが、髪が伸びると自然に新
らしいヘアースタイルが出来上がるので

いるかのようにみえます。(笑)
また、その日の天候にもよります。湿度
が高いと私の髪はよりウェーブがかかる
ので、いつもとは違うやり方で髪を整
えなければなりません。シャワーの後、
普段はタオルで乾かし、それから着替え
て戻り、少しだけドライヤーをあてます
それから、ギャツビータイムの始まり、
始まり〜。浴室にはさながらギャツビ塔
のようにギャツビーワックスが積んであ
ります。(笑)
髮にワックスを塗って、さぁ、いっ
ちょうあがり！新しいヘアースタイルの
完成！皆さんはどうですか？
