 Why didn’t someone tell me that there is an express train from Kamioooka to Gumyoji??  So many times I have jumped on the subway just to end up in Kannai.  When I get off the train, I have that look on my face that so many foreigners in Japan have that says “どこここ？？？” I feel so foolish as I casually walk around to the other train that heads back to Gumyoji.

Recently, I just take Keikyu from Kamioooka instead. It is only a 10 minute walk, and I enjoy going through the shopping arcade. 

Today’s pronunciation practice:

John: I want to do something special, and I was hoping you guys could be a part of it. Here’s the deal. I’m writing a song, and I was hoping we could all play it together.

Jack: OK. I wanna sing.

John: You can’t sing. I was hoping you would play the guitar.

Mai: Well, I can sing.

Mai: How am I gonna do that? I don’t have any arms.

なぜ今まで誰も上大岡から弘明寺まで急行列車があることを教えてくれなかったのだろう。乗り換えて飛び乗った地下鉄で何度関内まで行ってしまったことか。電車を降りた時の私といったら「どこここ？？？」といった、よくある日本の外国人の表情だ。 そんな自分があまりにも愚かに思えるのだが、弘明寺に戻る反対車線には何ごともなかったかのように歩く。

最近では上大岡から弘明寺まで、地下鉄ではなく、京急を利用している。そして駅から商店街を通る10分程の歩きを楽しんでいる。

The other day I saw an old, old, old, old lady pulling herself up the stairs at the station using the handrail. The look on her face reminded me of the way I look after running 10k. I offered to help her, but she adamantly refused. I realized that she could have taken the elevator, but it was her choice to take the stairs. This was her way of staying strong, I suppose. 

When I was moving into my new classroom, a similar situation occurred. I had many deliveries, the heaviest of which were the table and shelves. The man who delivered them walked with a limp. He moved slowly, but he carried the heavy boxes in all by himself.  I offered to help carry them, but he also refused. 

I wonder if people like this had such a strong will when they were young and strong. In any case, they give me inspiration and taught me not to complain when things are hard.

Today’s Pronunciation Practice:

John: What are you working on?

Jack: Can’t talk. In the zone.

 

John: Do you know what he’s doing?

Mai: I don’t know…could be anything.

 

John: Uh, you want to take a break? Your food’s ready. Time to eat! Did you eat yet?

Mai: No, No, what are  you doing? He’s both happy and quiet. It’s like seeing a unicorn and Bigfoot at the same time.

先日私は大変お年をめした女性が手すりを使いながら駅の階段をやっとの様子で登っているのを見かけました。その辛そうな表情は私が10キロ、ランニングし終えた時のようで、思わず私は何かお手伝いできることがありますかと尋ねました。しかし彼女はきっぱりと私の申し出を断りました。彼女はエレベーターを使う事だって出来たはずだったと私も気づき、それでも彼女は階段を選んだのだと思いいたりました。おそらく、これが彼女の元気でいるためのやり方なのでしょう。

新しい教室への引っ越しの際にも同じようなことがありました。たくさんの宅配物の中で最も重かったのはテーブルと椅子だったのですが、それらを運び入れてくれた業者さんは脚が不自由のようでした。彼の動きは非常にゆっくりではありましたが、重たい箱を一つ残らず一人で運びこみました。私は運ぶのを手伝いましょうといいましたが、この時も断られました。いったいこのような人達は若くて力のあった頃にもこんな強い精神力をもっていたのでしょうか？いづれにせよ、彼等は私にある種の感銘を与え、同時に、辛い時でも泣き言を言わない事を私に教えてくれました。

Flamingos are very interesting.  In my home state of Florida, there are many of them. Do you know why they are pink?  The color in their feathers comes from the food they eat! I  wonder what they would look like if they ate bananas, or broccoli? They can often be seen wading in the water.  To wade means to walk in shallow water. Another interesting fact about flamingos is that they are said to be monogamous.  That means that they are like people, and stay with the same partner. 

Recently, I read in the news that over 100,000 flamingos flocked to a lake in Mumbai.  Because of the coronavirus lockdown, there are not so many people outside, and the birds feel safe.  One of them got lost while flying from Miami and migrated to Japan!  Did you know that? She stays in Gumyoji now. Her name is Mai-chan! When you come to Miami, please take a photo with her. She likes people.

Today, I want to practice a little pronunciation. I will read a phrase and then give three examples. It is ok if you don’t understand the meaning because this is listening practice. Try to see if you can catch the phrase.

フラミンゴには大変興味深いはなしがあります。私の出身地、フロリダ州にはたくさんのフラミンゴがいます。皆さんはフラミンゴが何故ピンク色なのかご存知ですか？なんと、あの羽の色は彼らの食する物に由来しているのです! 彼らがバナナやブロッコリーを食べたらどんな色になるんだろうと思ったりします。水の中を歩いているのもよく見かけます。to wade とは浅瀬を歩く事です。また他にも興味深い事があります。フラミンゴはmonogamous モノガマスだと言われています。monogamousとは人のように、同じパートナーと連れ添う一夫一妻の事です。

最近１０万羽以上ものフラミンゴがムンバイの湖に群れをなしているというニュースを読みました。コロナウィルスで都市封鎖され、屋外の人々の数が激減したことが鳥たちに安心感をもたらしているようです。そのうちの１羽がマイアミからの飛行中、迷子になり 日本に移住したんですって！ご存知でしたか？彼女は今弘明寺にいます。彼女の名前はマイちゃんです。マイアミにきたら、ぜひ彼女と一緒に写真を撮って下さい。彼女は人が好きです。

今日は少し発音の練習をしたいとおもいます。まず私が１つフレーズを言います。続いて例文を３つ読みます。意味がとれなくても構いません。これはリスニングの練習ですから。このはじめのフレーズが聞き取れるかどうか試してみてください。

Probably, the most time-consuming part of setting up my new classroom was assembling the table and chairs. Each chair had so many pieces, and there were 8 of them!  Once I put together 2 of them, I started to get the hang of it, and could assemble them a little faster. Luckily, I had Mai-chan there to help me. It still took all day to finish all of them and the table. The table looks like one large table, but actually it is two smaller tables put together. So many nuts and bolts and screws! I was a little worried when I finished because there were some screws left that I hadn’t used.  They were probably spare parts...I hope.

今回の新教室開設にあたり、いち番時間のかかった部分はおそらく机と椅子の組み立て作業でしょう。椅子一脚にとても沢山のパーツがあり、しかもその椅子が八脚もあるのです。まずなんとかそのうちの二脚を組み立てると、コツがわかりはじめて少し速く組み立てられるようになりました。幸いなことに、そこには私を助けてくれるマイチャンがいます。それでも全ての椅子と机を終えるのに、まる一日かかりました。机は一見、一つの大きなテーブルのようにみえますが、実際は二つの小さなテーブルを付けて並べたものです。それにしてもなんとたくさんの、ナットやボルトやネジ! 少し心配になってきました、というのも作業を終えた時、使わなかったネジがいくつか残っているではありませんか。おそらく予備のネジ.....そう願っています。

I didn’t know that Gumyoji has so many interesting shops and restaurants. Back in March, when I was wandering around Gumyoji, a cozy little pizzeria called Massa’s happened to catch my eye. It is just a few minutes from my new classroom. It has an old-style oven with a bar in front of it. I like sitting at the bar and watching the fire cook my pizza. The place was on the second floor. It was small, but had a nice atmosphere. The owner was very friendly and let me practice my Japanese with him while I enjoyed sipping red wine and scarfing down my Margherita pizza!  I like places like this where you can chat with the owner.  Chain restaurants like GUSTO are cheap and yummy, but they seem so cold.  Now, GUSTO uses digital menus, so you don’t even get to speak with a waiter! I shouldn’t complain about GUSTO because I do like eating there.  I just think small cozy restaurants have a unique feeling, and are more enjoyable.I feel so lucky to have found such a nice place close to my classroom.  I think I will go there often!

弘明寺にこれほどたくさんのおもしろいお店やレストランがあるとは思っていませんでした。3月、弘明寺界隈をぶらぶらしていると、Massa’s という、こじんまりとしたピザ屋が偶然目にはいりました。私の新しい教室からほんの数分のところです。お店には古い型のピザ窯があり、その前にカウンターがあります。私はカウンター席に座り、自分のオーダーしたピザを焼いている炎をみているのが好きです。お店は二階にあります。小さいお店ですが、雰囲気はなかなかです。オーナーは気さくな人で、赤ワインをすすり、マルゲリータをほおばっている私に日本語の練習をさせてくれます。こんな風にそこの店主とちょっとしたおしゃべりができるようなお店が私は好きです。ガストのようなチェーン店は安くて美味しいのですが、店員さんは冷たい感じがします。今ではガストのメニューもデジタル化され(タッチパネルメニュー)店員と話すらできなくなっています。ガストで食事することもとても好きなので、不満をいってはいけないのですが。ただ小さなレストランにはもっと楽しめる個性的な雰囲気があるように思うのです。教室の近くにこのような素敵な場所をみつけることができたのは幸運でした。足繁く通うことになるでしょう。

The other day when I was browsing YouTube, I came across a clip of an old tv show called “The Lone Ranger”. The show was about a Texas Ranger who chased bad guys with his sidekick, Tonto. “Lone” means alone, and a ranger is like a police officer. Tonto, was a Native American. Actually, the Lone Ranger is really old, because it started as a radio show in 1933.

There was a remake of it in 2013 starring Johnny Depp. The best thing I liked about the show was the music. The theme song was the William Tell overture finale, but I think not many people knew the name of the song, so it is well-known as the “Lone-Ranger Song”. Even today, when I hear it, I immediately think of a man riding on a horse. Whenever I feel I am getting tired, I can listen to this song, and it instantly gives me energy to get going!

先日、YouTube を閲覧していると、“ザローン レンジャー”という昔のテレビ番組が目に留まりました。それは相棒のトントと一緒に悪漢を追いかけるテキサスのレンジャーの話です。Lone(ローン)はalone(一人で)という意味でLanger (レンジャー)は警察官のようなものです。トントはアメリカ原住民です。実はこのLaneRanger は古いおはなしです。というのも1933年にラジオ番組として始まったものなのです。2013年にはジョニー•ディップ出演によるリメイク版も公開されました。わたしがこの番組で最も気にいっていたのはその音楽です。このテーマソングはウィリアムテル序曲(終曲)ですが、この曲名をそれほど多くの人が知っているとは思えません。むしろローンレンジャーの曲としてよく知られているのではないでしょうか。今でも私はこの曲をきくと、馬にまたがった男が浮かび、疲れてきたなと感じるような時にこの曲を聞けばまたエネルギーがチャージされて進むことができるのです。

#701 - I quit the gym

It was a difficult decision, but I finally decided that it was time to quit the gym.  Around the end of March, the news of the corona virus seemed to be getting worse and worse, so I thought it was better to be safe than sorry, so I went to the gym and told them I wanted to take a break. They said I could, but only for 2 months.
I thought this would be a good time to change my routine.  Instead of going to the gym, I have been going to the park to workout.  However, sometimes I wonder if it is safer than the gym.  One day when I went to the park, I met the evil Corona monster! Actually, it was about 50 of them, all running around the park yelling and screaming.  It seems that a kindergarten nearby was bringing all the little rugrats here to play.  Since then, I have changed parks and sometimes go to the beach instead to workout.

I am so tired of staying home every day. I used to enjoy going out to cafes and restaurants, shopping, and going for walks around the city. Now, I just stay home almost everyday. I have “cabin fever”.

What is “cabin fever”? It is an idiom that people use when they are tired of being at home. For example, if you have been sick and haven’t left your house for days, or if you have been working from home everyday, or self-isolating due to the corona virus, you might feel anxious and want to go outside.

No one knows exactly where this idiom comes from, but it may have been used by the early pioneers in America, who spent long winters in their log cabin, unable to go out because of the heavy snow and cold.

Actually, sometimes I go out to visit my classroom and say hi to Mai chan, and to the convenience store to buy chocolate.

実際のところ、私は時々、自分の教室に出かけ、マイちゃんに挨拶し、コンビニでチョコを買ったりしています。

Signing the contract for my new classroom was a big decision for me. The news of Corona had just come out. I didn’t know what to do. At that time, it wasn’t easy to see what would happen. Opening my own classroom had been a dream of mine for years. I had actually been going to see the real estate agent for the past six months trying to find the perfect place. Now, I finally found the perfect place, but a deadly virus in Wuhan was threatening the world. I decided to take a chance, roll the dice, and let the cards fall where they may. I opened my school on April 6, and on April 8 the Prime Minister declared a state of emergency and basically told everyone to stay home. Ha! I know I will laugh about this someday...I hope. Someone once said, “Life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows”. It’s raining now…all I can do is sit and wait for the sunshine to come.

サイコロを振ってみようと決断しました
私は4月6日に開校しました。そして８日
にあの総理の緊急事態宣言で国民に外出
自粛を要請したのです。Ha! いつかこん
な事を笑える日が来るだろうとわかって
はいますが.... と望みますが。
誰かがこんな事を言ってました。
“人生は陽の光や虹
ばかりではない”
今は雨が降っています。今私にできる事
は座って太陽の光が訪れのを待つ事だけ
です。

After I signed the contract for my new classroom, I received the key today and went there for the first time. Along the way, I noticed that the bus stop is very close, only about 1 minute from the classroom! I am so excited about it. It looks so bright with so much light coming in through the windows. When I arrived there, the owner, Osaki san was out front cleaning the trash area. I greeted him and introduced myself. He seemed like a very nice man. He owns a tonkatsu restaurant next door!

Despite the terrible corona news lately, I feel very happy. The new classroom is full of fresh air and feels so good. Nearby is Ookagawa river. The cherry blossoms are just starting to come out. The shopping arcade is filled with many shopping and is bristling with energy. I am really looking forward to teaching in Gumyoji.

くにあるバス停を見つけましたよ。

教室からたった一分です! これには興奮

しました。

窓から溢れはいる陽光で部屋はとても明

外のごみ集積場を掃除していました。

彼に挨拶をし、自己紹介をしました。

最近は新型コロナウィルスの酷いニュー

スばかりですが、新教室を得た私は、嬉

しい気持ちになりました。

教室は新鮮な空気にあふれていてとても

桜がちょうど咲き始めていました。

商店街は沢山の買い出しで賑わい、活気

に満ち溢れています。

弘明寺で皆さんを迎え、英語を教える日

をとても楽しみにしています。

I had made it through one whole week of fasting without eating any of my students. I was proud of myself. The only thing I had put in my mouth for one week was salt, tea, and water. However, the fun wasn’t over yet. Fasting is a good diet because it is impossible to “rebound”. Once before, I fasted for 2 days. After that, I pigged out and had a big meal. Needless to say, my stomach wasn’t ready for that, and my butt exploded in diarrhea. So, this time I decided to be careful. I ate only corn soup the first day, and very small portion of soft foods for the first few days after that. It took me about one week to get back to normal. It was a great experience for me. I think I will do it twice a year from now on. Fasting has so many good health benefits. If you are interested, please do a little research about it.

ができていません。結果、お尻から火が
吹いたような下痢に見舞われてしまいま

に戻すのに一週間かけました。
今回の断食は私にとって大変有意義で貴

重な体験となりました。

これからも年に二度ほど試みようかと考
えています。

断食には大変多くの健康面での利点があ
ります。

So there I was enjoying a little piece of heaven under the sun among the plum trees. I had just started eating my delicious bagel when I noticed the bamboo trees seemed to be bowing at me as the gentle wind pushed them over. How nice! Then…
BAM!!!! OH MY GOD!! WHAT WAS THAT?!?? WHERE IS MY BAGEL?!!!
A hawk had come out of nowhere and stole my bagel! I stood up and shouted, NO!!!!!!!!! YOU BASTARD!!!! The hawk flew off with my delicious bagel and left me with nothing but feathers and a few scratches on my fingers. Oh, well. Things could be worse. I still had the view, and the trees, and

竹がまるで私にむかってお辞儀をしてい

どこからともなくやってきた鷹が ベーグ

鷹はその羽と私の指に引っ掻き傷だけを

残し、あの美味しい私のベーグルと共に
飛び去ったのです。

それでもまだマシかな
私にはまだこの景色と木々があるんだ

Let’s get started!

I had brought a delicious bagel with me to enjoy while looking at the scenery. I usually eat only one meal a day, but sometimes I make an exception. I found a nice bench to sit on that was gently warmed by the kindness of the sun. I took the bagel out of my bag. First, I made sure to wipe my hands clean of any viruses, and then I unwrapped my bagel. It was a chocolate chip bagel with salmon, lettuce and cheese. It seemed to melt in my mouth as I bit into it. It was such a nice and peaceful moment. The trees seemed to be waving at me as the wind blew them from side to side.

グルパンを持参していました。普段は１

日1食なのですが、時々例外を作ります。

座るのに良さそうなベンチを見つけまし

た。やさしい太陽の陽にあたためられて

います。ベーグルを袋から取り出しまし

た。まずはじめに、手のばい菌をしっか

りふきとりました。それからベーグルの

包み紙を開きました。サーモン、レタス

チーズの入ったチョコレートチップベー

グルです。ひとかじりすると、それらが

口のなかで溶けあっていくようです。

幸せな瞬間です。木々は右へ左へと風に

揺れ、まるで私に手を振っているかのよ

うです。
