Everybody Run!

Key words & Phrases
  • good for your body 体に良い
  • do laundry 洗濯物する
  • give up 飽きる
  • encourage 応援する
  • brain 脳

Easy part 簡単

Today the weather is so nice. I should do laundry today. This morning I went for a run. I ran about 5 kilometers. It was fun. It felt so good. I ran along the river. I wish everyone would enjoy running. It is good for your body, and will help you live a long, happy life!

Hard part チャレンジ

It is a great day for running, I thought, so I went for a 5k run.  I took it easy today and didn't run too hard, but enough to make my heart beat fast and to break a good sweat.  Running is one of the best exercises for your body.  If you enjoy studying English to get exercise for your brain, then I encourage you to also get exercise for your body. Many people don't like running because it is hard. I think they overdo it when they start and then give up too quickly. When you first start running, you shouldn't go for an hour, but just for 10 minutes. Try that 3 times a week until you get used to it, then increase the time to 12 minutes, then to 15, and then to 20. After that, you can choose to run longer distances or shorter but faster distances.
By studying English, you take care of your mind.  Your brain needs your body to function. Take care of your body, too.

This morning I woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

****************
Getting up or waking up on the wrong side of the bed is a common saying that simply means you start the day feeling tired, unhappy, uncomfortable, or grumpy. If you wake up rested, happy and ready to tackle the day, then you definitely got up or woke up on the right side of the bed.
***************************
I woke up a little later than usual, did my exercise, took a shower, got ready and ran out the door.  I ran to the station, but the train left just as I reached the platform.  Then the next train was packed, so I couldn't get a seat.  That's why I couldn't write my blog this morning. The train was delayed on top of that. When I got to Kamioooka, I ran to class and made it just in time.  Seeing everyone's smiling faces lifted me up again.  I am lucky to have a job like this, I thought.

Yesterday in the movie class, we watched parts of "Casablanca".  I like the old black & white movies.  The dialogue is usually interesting, the story is deeper, and with less focus on special effects, CGI, explosions, and over-the-top action sequences. Sometimes it seems like all Hollywood movies are the same these days; Muscle guys, super-sexy girls, lots of guns and explosions and someone has to yell out, "OH MY GOD!!!!".

TIME ZIPS PAST

Time really goes by in the blink of an eye, doesn't it? I remember when I was a child, when I wanted a new toy, my mom would always say, "Wait until Christmas".  I felt like Christmas was always a lifetime away, and it would never come.  I remember thinking as a child that I wanted to drive a car, but I was so disappointed because I thought it would take forever for me to become an adult.  Now, I feel like it was April just yesterday and tomorrow will be December. It frightens me a little when I think about how quickly time zips past. How about you?

By the way, I added the audio for yesterday's blog. Check it out when you have TIME.

Here is an idiom about TIME

ZIP PAST

zip past

Meaning

  • to move past (someone or something) very fast
  • to move rapidly
  • a swift movement, usually ignoring someone or something in the way

Example Sentences

  1. The guy just zipped past me in the queue today without bothering about the rules of the organization.
  2. I would like to advise you to not zip past the process and to follow the correct path to get to your destination.
  3. You like zipping past people, don’t you? It is the third time you have done it to me now.
  4. zip past the coffee machine on purpose every day because I am trying to be mindful about my caffeine intake.
  5. I just zipped past everybody because I really wanted to use the loo first.
  6. You cannot zip past the authorities so do not try.
  7. I will zip past him and he will not even get to know.
  8. You just zipped past me, did you know?

Whale Sightings

Did you hear the news? Killer whales were seen in Tokyo Bay.  I saw videos of them on YouTube.  They look very elegant jumping around in the water. The Japanese Coast Guard was called to protect them from other ships.  I'm worried that a boat might hit one of them.  Is it normal for whales to be in Tokyo Bay?

Speaking of whales, here is an interesting idiom you might like to know:

A WHALE OF

a whale of something
Meaning
  • very big (piece) of something
  • exceptionally large of something
  • great amount of something often unusually done
  • It can be referred to anything that has been big, even fun time.
Example Sentences
  1. That birthday party was super fun, all the children had a whale of a time there.
  2. The story book was a whale of fun.
  3. In Bollywood they generally make a whale of a movie. It encompasses song and dance sequences too.
  4. To say no to this party would be to refuse a whale of time. It has amongst the best food and drinks in the region.
  5. How could she have such a whale of a time at the movies when her son is so far away?
  6. He completed this whale of a task all by himself. Everyone in the office was surprised, including the boss.
  7. There is a whale of a difference in calling someone their friend and treating them like that.
  8. This picnic spot can be enjoyed thoroughly only if you are here with your family and have a whale of a time to spend here.
OriginA Whale of something is to mean big of something, based on the size of the Whale. The origin of this phrase is unavailable.

Free Shake! - October 10, 2010

The other night I went to Mosburger. I like Mosburger because of their shakes. Usually, every time I go to Mosburger, I get a strawberry shake. So anyway, I was drinking my milkshake, and suddenly I noticed there was a crack in the glass! I thought I should take it back to get another one, but I already drank half of it! But since drinking from a cracked glass could be dangerous, I decided to take it back. The clerk apologized and I got another milkshake free! So from now on, anytime I go to Mosburger I check to see if my glass is cracked - after I drink half of my milkshake!

NO CLASS TODAY

I don't like to use the word, "jogging". Jogging sounds too easy. When I go running, I run hard. Sometimes I pass other people.  Sometimes I pass people on bicycles.. Sometimes people pass me.  I learned to never judge people.  For example, if someone is slow, it might be because they have been jogging a long time already. If someone is fast, it may be because they just started.

Life is the same; don't you think so?

EASY PART

This morning when I woke up, I put on my glasses. I panicked because everything was so blurry and I couldn't see anything!.  I thought maybe I was getting glaucoma! OMG! Then I realized that it was because I had forgotten to take out my contact lenses the night before. What a relief.

HARD PART

NERD -
1. a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person.
2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit.

I remember when I was a small child, maybe 1st grade or so, I used to laugh at the other children who wore glasses. Then one day, I think when I was in the third grade maybe, my father and I were sitting in our car in the parking lot of the shopping mall. He asked me to read to him the license plates of other cars. I couldn't. Then I remember those dreadful words...."Son, I think you need glasses".  I thought to myself "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I CAN'T!! THE OTHER KIDS WILL LAUGH AT ME AND CALL ME 'FOUR EYES'."  My parents drug me to the eye clinic, and I got me a pair of glasses.  I felt like such a nerd.

Before that, I remember having trouble in school.  My grades were very poor and my mother asked me why I never had any homework. I said "I dunno".   It was because the teacher had written our homework assignment on the board, but I could never see what was on the board. After getting glasses, I was amazed at how well I could suddenly see.  But.....I think I never wore them again in school because I didn't want to look nerdy. Instead, I just sat at the front of the class.

Arnold has his gym face on.
Japanese people smile a lot.  Sometimes I like it because when I see their smiles, it makes me want to smile, too. It makes for a pleasant situation when meeting other people.  However, yesterday I saw a poster for a sports club. All the people were smiling and they looked so relaxed as if they were having a nice easy time at the gym. That isn't what it's like at the gym!! If you are working out at the gym, you should be covered in sweat and have a grimace on your face from the pain you get from training hard. There should be a sign in the gym that says "NO SMILES, ONLY PAIN" ha ha ha Smiles are for people who eat donuts and, for studying English , of course.

NO PAIN, NO GAIN!

I heard that Japan won their first match again Columbia. That's great.  It seems that Japan got lucky, though.  One of the players for the Columbian team was pulled out of the game because he touched the ball with his hands. Why would he do such a thing? Everybody knows that you can't do that in soccer. It's common sense! Anyway, after that, the Columbian team was outnumbered.  Additionally, one of their top players couldn't play due to an injury. That's what I heard, anyway.
Let's hope that this win gives the Japanese team the motivation it needs to win their next match. I'll keep my fingers crossed!
