4/23 #673 Radio

クラスありますよー😀

New phrase:

to tune someone out - this means to stop listening or paying attention to someone who is speaking.

Example:
  1. I didn't like math. In class, I often tuned my teacher out and started drawing on my paper.
  2. The child didn't listen to his mother. All he could do was tune her out while thinking about Star Wars.
  3. Many people said he couldn't do it, but he tuned them out and did his best.

Radio

I remember when I was young, I used to listen to the radio. There were only about 6 stations you could tune in to. There were 2 country stations, 2 rock stations, 1 oldies station, and 1 R&B station. All those stations played music only.
If you wanted talk radio, you had listen to AM radio. However, in the mornings many radio stations had talk shows for people on their morning commute. I was never interested in those talk shows and just tuned them out. I think Japanese radio has more talk than music.  We have an AM station called NPR (National Public Radio) which is similar to NHK. These days, I never listen to the radio anymore. Does anyone?

Thank-you for checking out my blog. If you have any friends, please tell them about it!

Leave a comment and have a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful day!

Challenge Time!

1. How many radio stations were there?

2. What’s the difference between Japanese radio and radio in the U.S.?

3. Did I enjoy listening to the morning talk shows?

New words & phrases:

"A piece of cake" - very easy, simple
Examples:
  1.  The English test today was so easy. It was a piece of cake.
  2.  If you have a smartphone, then travelling around Tokyo is a piece of cake.
  3.  Kanji is so difficult for me, but for Japanese people it is a piece of cake.
Queen

It seems that everyone has fallen in love with Queen lately because of their recent movie. I remember when I was in high school, there was a movie called "Wayne's World".  The theme song for the movie was "Bohemian Rhapsody. The main actor is Mike Myers. He also appeared in the recent Queen movie. Wayne's World was so funny, and I fell in love with the song.  Another famous movie with a song by Queen is "Flash Gordon", also a favorite movie of mine.

When I go to karaoke, I sometimes try to sing Queen songs. It is so difficult for me to sing both the high and low parts, but I am sure that singing was a piece of cake for Freddy. One of my favorite Queen songs is "A Crazy Little Thing Called Love".

Peachy
How are you today? I'm just peachy. It means "I'm fine".  Some people say "peachy keen". Speaking of peaches, do you know what state in the U.S. is famous for peaches?
It's Georgia. Maybe you think of coffee when you hear the word Georgia, but I think of peaches. When I was a child and lived in Virginia, we would drive down to Alabama from time to time to meet my grandparents.  On the way, we would pass through Georgia and make sure to pick up some delicious peaches. They were so big and juicy.  I couldn't wait to eat mine, so I bit into it and ate it without even peeling it.

New words & phrases:
In case
bright
pronunciation

Oranges
In case you haven't noticed, I like the color orange.   I like it because it isn't too bright, and it isn't too dark.  Florida is famous for oranges, although I had never seen an orange tree until I came to Japan. lol.  The pronunciation of the word orange is almost the same as "aren't". That reminds me of a joke.

Jack: Knock, knock.
John: Who's there?
Jack: Banana
John: Banana who?
Jack: Knock, knock.
John: Who's there?
Jack: Banana
John: Banana who?
Jack: Knock, knock.

Jack: Orange you glad I didn't say banana?

Marathon
This year I am going to try to run the Yokohama Marathon.  I have heard that it is difficult to enter because there is a limit to the number of people who are allowed to run.  However, a number of entries just for foreigners are allowed - 1000. Hopefully, not that many foreigners are going to join. The marathon will be held November 10, but registration is April 17.  The bad thing is that the registration fee is ¥17000! It is expensive, but running a marathon is on my bucket list so I have gotta do it. Wish me luck!

Locker

Schools in the U.S. have lockers for the students to keep their books in. I remember my first locker. It was in middle school. It was more like a trash can for my unfinished homework and textbooks, ha ha. It was so incredibly messy. It had a combination lock, and I still remember the combination! I hated taking my books home, so I did my best to finish my homework in school. I didn’t even have a bag.

The good thing about the locker was that it had 3 slits in the front of it. One time I wrote an anonymous love letter to a girl I liked and slipped it into her locker between classes. Her name was Jennifer. I never told her that I wrote the note. What did I write? It was such a long time ago. It makes me laugh when I think about it.
