#691 Fasting - Part 1

Miami Today
Blog #691
Blog Topic: Fasting

Let’s get started!

Some of you may have noticed that I have slimmed down a little bit. I have heard many people say “John, your face looks thin.” The reason is because I have been fasting. Since the beginning of the year I have tried to only eat 1 meal a day, plus supplements. At first, it was hard because at lunchtime my stomach started growling and I became hungry. However, I found that if I could bear the feeling of hunger, I soon got over it. Before, I used to be so sleepy on the train in the morning after eating breakfast, and I always needed a nap after eating lunch. Now, I enjoy reading every morning on the train and working during my lunchtime. Furthermore, I have lots of energy for teaching in the afternoon! I was very impressed by this, so I decided to read some books on fasting. After that, I decided to challenge myself and fast for one week. TO BE CONTINUED…...

Question Time:
1. Have you ever tried fasting?
2. What is the longest period of time that you have gone without eating?
3. Does eating make you sleepy?

1. New Phrase:

pig out

informal
— phrasal verb with pig US /pɪɡ/

verb -gg-

to eat a lot or too much:
Examples:
1. We pigged out on all the delicious cakes and pastries.
2. Even though I exercise a lot, I feel like I want to pig out on pizza sometimes.
3. It doesn't make any sense to exercise and pig out every night.

2. New Vocabulary:

appetite
strategy

3. Blog Topic: Eating

Do you like to eat? Who doesn't?  Everybody loves eating, I think. However, some people like eating too much.  When I eat, I try to eat small meals. I don't like the feeling of being too full. I exercise a lot, but after I exercise I feel even hungrier than before. It is a difficult situation. Exercise seems to give me a bigger appetite. The more I exercise, the more I want to eat.  After running, I feel like I wanna pig out on something. I heard that if you feel like pigging out, it is best to eat really sweet chocolate. The reason is because it is too sweet and you won't be able to eat so much. Does that sound like a good strategy? So remember, the next time you see me eating chocolate it is because I am on a diet, ha ha.

4. Challenge Time:
1.  What size meals do I like to eat?
2.  Why do I feel hungrier than before?
3.  What should you do to avoid pigging out?

5/10 #678 Azaleas Pt.2

クラスありますよー😀

5/13は休校です💩

*********************

Today's phrase:
"break out" - this verb has many definitions, but today we are talking about the skin.

to suddenly begin to have a rash (= spots on the skin):

Examples:
1. Detergents make my hands break out.
2. I hate it when I break out in hives.
3. Sometimes the heat and humidity causes me to break out in a rash.

Azaleas Pt.2
For me, azaleas bring back memories from my childhood.  It front of our house, there were big bushes of pink and white azaleas. It's funny how everything in your childhood memories was big. I remember my mother would often take care of them, and her hands would break out.  Did you know that azaleas are poisonous? You can die from the honey made from azaleas.  I am not sure if that is the reason for her hands breaking out, but you should definitely not try to eat them.

Challenge Time!

1. Have you ever broken out in anything?
2. Where were the azaleas?
3. Is it ok to eat azaleas? Why or why not?

Today's phrase:

stop and smell the roses. (idiomatic) To relax; to take time out of one's busy schedule to enjoy or appreciate the beauty of life.

Examples:

4. This work has to be finished asap! There is no time to stop and smell the roses.

Azaleas pt.1

Did you know there is an underground shopping area in Kawasaki called "Azalea"?  There is a big sign in English next to the Keikyu Kawasaki station. I think many people ignore it because it is in English.  Do you know what "azalea" means?  In Japanese, it is つつじ. I like azaleas even though I may be allergic to them.  Sometimes they make me sneeze.  Anyway, I think they are very beautiful to look at . There are many varieties. Did you know that Nezu shrine in Tokyo is famous for Azaleas? I read that they have a festival every year with thousands of plants. I would like to go see them, but I am so busy teaching. There is no time to stop and smell the roses!

Challenge Time!

1. How do you say つつじ in English?
2. What happens when I get near azaleas?
3. Where is a good place to see azaleas?

Today's phrase:

"Hit the books" - This means to start studying.

Back to School!

How was your Golden Week? Did you enjoy your time off?  I was busy working, but I am happy because I got many things done. I started a new Instagram and Travel English mail magazine. Please check them out if you have time:

It seems that I had allergies during Golden Week. How about you? I am not sure what kind. Perhaps it was the azaleas.  One day I went running in the morning, and I couldn't stop sneezing the rest of the day.

Are you happy or sad that Golden Week is finished?  I read on the internet about GW病。It said that many people feel depressed because they have to get back to work or hit the books again. Not me! I feel recharged and am looking forward to teaching again.  See you in class!

Challenge Time!

1. How many times a week do you hit the books?
2. Why do some people feel depressed after GW?
3. Why did I have allergies during GW?
