Waimea Canyon

Easy part 簡単　You can do it!

I think when most people think of Hawaii, of course, they think of the beautiful beaches. What most people don't know, however, is that there is a huge canyon on Kauai Island. It is approximately 16 km long, and 900 m deep. The view is magnificent!

Hard part チャレンジ  Give it your best shot!

Waimea Canyon is nicknamed "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific". I had been to the Grand Canyon in Arizona before. In comparison, it is about 29 km wide and 1.6 km deep.  It is bigger, but I think the biggest difference is that Waimea is covered in green.

Surfing

When I was in Hawaii, I decided to take a surfing lesson. It was a lot of fun. I signed up for a group lesson. There are 4 people in a group. However, since I was the 5th person, I ended up getting a private lesson! I really enjoyed it. The most difficult part is the timing for catching a wave. My teacher was great, and he taught me many things. He asked me where I am from. I told him that I live in Japan. He said "Your English is very good." lol. I said "サンキュべりマッチョ。

First, I want to apologize for forgetting to record the audio for my blog recently.  I will do it during my lunch break today.

Today, I think I'll take a break from talking about Hawaii and tell you about my newest piece of exercise equipment instead.  It is a pull-up bar.  I bought it on Amazon.  It is very handy and easy to use.  There are two rubber stoppers on each end, and I just twist the bar to extend it.  I can install it in any doorway without any screws.  When I'm not using it, I can hang my laundry on it to dry! S'more!

One of the things that people typically do when they go camping is roasting marshmallows.  It is not so easy because your marshmallow might turn black, or melt and fall off the stick.  The trick is to let the inside heat up and expand while letting the outside become a nice crispy golden-brown color.  When you have the perfect marshmallow, you then put a piece of chocolate on top and put it between two cookies, and you have what is called a "s'more". It is pronounced, "some more".

Shave Ice

You can do it!

In Hawaii, everyone loves "shave ice".  Shave ice is カキ氷 in Japanese.  I think the reason it is called shave ice is because you have to shave a big block of ice to make it.  On Kauai, there is a famous shave ice shop on the west side of the island called "JoJo's Shave Ice".  They had many different flavors.  I got a root beer shave ice. If you have never had root beer before, it kind of tastes like Dr. Pepper.  It had ice cream in the bottom of the cup under the ice.  While I was enjoying my shave ice, a little gecko came and sat next to me.  I thought he wanted me to buy car insurance, but he just wanted some of my shave ice. I gave him some and he seemed to enjoy it.

It isn't easy to get around in Hawaii if you don't have a car, especially on Kauai. Before I left for Hawaii, I arranged to rent a car on the internet. Of course, since I don't have much money, I reserved the cheapest compact car. However, when I got there, the car rental agent handed me the keys to a MUSTANG!  A Mustang is a really cool sports car. Apparently, there was some kind of mistake and I was so lucky!

I had so much fun driving the Mustang around everyday. In Japan, there are so many tolls, and it is expensive to drive anywhere. Furthermore, parking is expensive and the roads are so crowded.  It seems like there is always traffic in Japan.  When driving on the highway, you must stay in the left lane and use the right lane only for passing. However, in the U.S., it is ok to stay only in the right lane ( actually it is the opposite side, though. ) What I mean is that one lane is for slow cars, and one lane is for fast cars. Needless to say, I rolled down the windows, turned up the music, revved up the engine and lived life in the fast lane!

I am happy to be back in Japan now. When I got off the plane at Haneda, I noticed right away that the air felt very heavy. The climate is very different from Hawaii.  I still have a little jet lag.  I feel sleepy during the day and I can't sleep at night. I am sorry if I get sleepy in class!

Hard part チャレンジ  Give it your best shot!

The supermarket in Hawaii was so different from the supermarket in Japan. First of all, it was much bigger! The aisles were filled with so much food; cakes, candy, cereal, soda, etc.  It was hard to turn a blind eye to all the sweets!!!  I felt guilty for eating a lot of chocolate and candy when I was there, but I couldn't say no to my sweet tooth.  Check out the pictures I took of the supermarket and tell me if you could resist!

The other day, I gave my souvenirs to my relatives. I said, "Do you like POCKY?" My cousin looked at me with a strange look. He couldn't understand.  He said, "Raw fish?"

Hawaiian people know POCKY, but they pronounce it differently. I said ポッキー、but they pronounce it ぱっきー。My cousing thought I said ぽっけ, which is a type of Hawaiian raw fish salad. It's kinda like マグロドン。

Food!

Last night for dinner, I went to the supermarket. I bought a chicken and a chicken salad. Tonight, I went to a restaurant and ordered steak. It has been a long time since I have had a big American steak. I added some steak sauce, put ketchup on my rice and felt right at home again.
