THE BRUSH OFF
By Anonymous
This morning, a woman with a mask standing on the platform opposite me made a gesture and waved, but I couldn't tell who she was at all. I thought she mistook me for someone else. After I got on the train I suddenly realized who she was! I would have recognized her if she hadn't been wearing a mask. Anyway, I will have to apologize to her next time I see her for brushing her off like that.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Today is a holiday known as St. Patrick's Day. Some people also call it "St. Paddy's Day" for short. St. Patrick was a priest who taught Christianity to many people in Ireland. Sometimes, he used a 3-leaved clover called a Shamrock to explain the meaning of God. According to Christianity, God has 3 parts.
On St. Patrick's Day, many people wear green because it is the color associated with Ireland. When I was in elementary school, I used to play a game with other children. We checked to see who was and wasn't wearing green. The person who wasn't wearing green would get a pinch! I wonder if children still play this game.

What is Miami Chat Time?
Miami Chat Time とは?
"Hello, my name is Mr. Tanaka. I am in the Beginner T class. Nice to meet you."
A: はじめに"excuse me,......"
追記;
What is Miami Chat Time?
I had the idea that if my students could practice their English daily, it would help them to improve. Miami chat time is a group chat with many of my students. It is not a classroom, so there will be no set topics. Rather, it is a place to practice what you have learned freely and make friends with other students of English. The best part is you can chat with me sometimes! Here are some common questions that I have recieved and tried to answer:
Q: I am concerned about my level.
-Don't worry about your level because there are students from my beginner classes , intermediate classes, and advanced classes.
Q: I am hesitating because I don't know anyone in the chat.
-It's ok because many other people who are chatting are the same like you. The first time you chat, you should say something like "Hello, my name is Mr. Tanaka. I am in the Beginner T class. Nice to meet you." After you start chatting, you can make new friends using English!
Q: What should I chat about?
- Use new grammar and vocabulary that you have learned recently.
- Make comments about your daily activities and include photos.
- Ask questions to the group on any topic.
- Reply to other's comments even if you don't know that person.
Q: What time is it ok to post?
-Anytime is ok bacause members can turn off the group notifications in the chat room options (top right corner) if they want to make their phone quiet.
Q: What are the rules?
-be polite
-try to be kind if you correct other's English
-always say "please" and "thank-you"
-no bullying, bad or mean words
-be supportive and encouraging to other people
-NO SILENCE! You must try your English sometimes! Everyone is happy to hear from you!
-ENGLISH ONLY! This is a chat room to practice English, so no speaking in Japanese!
Q: I am unsure when to join the conversation, what should I do?
-Just say "excuse me,......" and say whatever you like. There may be many people in the room, so sometimes there may be more than one conversation going on at a time!
Q: I am worried about bothering other people with my poor English, what should I do?
-Don't worry because everyone makes mistakes. The key to improving your level is knowing that you will make mistakes, but speaking anyway.
Q: I am worried that I have made someone upset, what should I do?
- If you feel that you have unintentionally made someone upset, then politely apologize and move on! It is not good to worry too much. Everyone sometimes makes mistakes and unintentionally says the wrong thing. It's ok.
Q: How much or how often should I leave comments?
-Don't talk so much that other people can't have a chance to talk. However, I think that it is important to use English as much as possible, so try to chat with all members in the room, not only with one person if you are a chatty person. Being chatty is good when comes to learning English, but try to share your fun with everyone!
Q: How much does it cost?
-It's a free service for the Miami English Communication School. I love being able to chat with my students freely anytime I like, so please use it FREELY!
Q: Should I correct other's English?
-Yes, it is ok! I hope that everyone can work together to help each other's english. Just remember to be respectful and polite.
Q: How do I join?
-You can send me an email with your LINE ID. I will then invite you to the room.
By the way, in the photos section, you can download my logo and use it for your chatroom wallpaper! Then you can look super-fabulous while chatting!
If you have any other questions, please email me and I will add yours to the list!

Kounan Lounge Festival
Last year I participated in a Japanese speech contest at the Kounan Lounge Festival. I gave a speech about Japanese women and monsters. This year, I was asked to be the MC for the event. By the way, as the MC, I knew that I would have to speak only in Japanese, so I knew it wasn't going to be easy for me. Speaking broken Japanese in ordinary conversation is one thing, but trying to speak perfectly with polite Japanese in front of 200 people would be a challenge for me. But in any case, I was very happy to be part of it. In addition to being the MC, I was also asked to sing a few lines from "Let it go". I am not that great a singer, but I love singing, so I thought, "Why not?". I had been practicing everyday for the past month up to the event which was held yesterday. There was also a rehearsal about a week ago which I pulled off without a hitch, including the singing part, in acepella! Then came the big day.
When I stepped up to the microphone, and started to speak, I thought something was wrong with the mic because I couldn't hear my voice. Someone rushed out to check my mic, but then I realized that it was working ok. My voice wasn't because I was so nervous. However, after a while I calmed down and finished it until the end. The foreign speakers were really great. I had taken a break from studying Japanese because I have been so busy at work, but this motivated me to start again!
The festival was a lot of fun for me, and I was really happy to be part of it. Maybe next year I will take part in the karaoke contest!

HAY FEVER
I have good news and bad news. The good news is that Spring is almost here. The weather is starting to warm up, flowers are beginning to blossom, and the days are getting longer! The bad news is that it is allergy season once again. In my country, many people have many different types of allergies, but in Japan it seems like many people are allergic to cedar pollen. It affects me only slightly, though. I have been taking medicine for it, and I am fine. However, even though the doctor said it won't make me sleepy, I still find myself feeling drowsy in class sometimes.

Japanese Paper Crafts
Last week, one of my students made this paper craft and brought it to class. On a day when there was no class, she said she spent the whole day working on it, and then another two days to complete it. She showed it to us and explained that it was a scene from "The Tales of Genji". I was really impressed! I am looking forward to seeing more of her art.

Christmas Party
On Friday, I had a big Christmas Party for my school. It was so much fun. I was impressed that everyone was so fashionable. One of my students even wore a kimono, and it was so nice! We played bingo with Christmas words. At first, no one was winning, but then suddenly 7 people got BINGO all at once! After Bingo, there was an exciting magic show and then Santa came! He handed out many presents and then he danced in front of everyone! I bet you didn't know that Santa can dance. However, it seems that Santa had been dieting because his pants kept falling down while he was dancing! After Santa left, many people got up and started dancing, too.
It was a great Christmas party, and I am really happy that so many people came! Thank-you so much!

Dr. Tannen confesses that the breaking up of her marriage and figuring out the cause of it triggered her interest in linguistics. So, it’s no wonder that this book is often chosen as a wedding gift for a new couple. This book is full of tips for developing good relationships not only with your partner and friends, but also with people in your work place; co-workers, bosses, customers. Besides, I think that this is a very useful and informative book, especially for English learners who are unfamiliar with typical communication styles in English-speaking countries.

Since yesterday was Culture Day in Japan, I decided to talk about Japanese culture in my classes. I am very grateful to my students for teaching me so much. One reason I enjoy living in Japan is because I can learn many new things. I think Japan has many good things to teach the world. It has a very beautiful culture.
I used to write a blog about Japanese culture. This year, I have been busy with my school, so I haven't written anything, unfortunately. I want to continue my study of Japanese culture again!

THE SAFE
By Akiko Aiba
Six years have gone by since my father passed away.
There is an old storehouse with thick mortar walls at my parents' home.
It was always locked、and so neither my brother, my sister, nor I had ever been inside.
But after my father's death, we could open the door so easily with a key.
Then, we found a small safe inside. The safe had two dials. We had no choice but to try. I turned the first dial one number at a time, until I could hear a clicking sound. It took me about one hour just for the first dial. But there was another one. I tried again in the same way. We became very anxious as time went by.
When I heard the second “click”, my heart started to beat so quickly, as the door cracked open.
“It's opened!” I screamed. All of us peered into the safe.
What do you think we saw in that safe?
Only a piece of paper.
It was a very very important paper.
My father wrote down the safe combination on it, and then he put it into the safe and locked it.
Why? Nobody knows….

THE DOG FROM HELL
By Mariko Araki
I had a scary experience last Tuesday.
Last Tuesday evening, I went to the park with my dog, Moca.
Many dogs were running around there, I knew none of them.
When we approached them, suddenly one dog without a leash rushed toward us. I panicked and bent down to pick up Moca.
Fortunately she was safe but unfortunately I was bitten on my right hand by the dog. My poor hand swelled up and ached badly the next morning. Since then I’ve been unable to do my domestic chores.
The most regrettable thing for me is that because of that injury, I couldn’t see my classmates at a party which is held every 4 years in my hometown.

WHAT IS SCARY TO ME
By Kanreki Y.
Is it visible or not, real or virtual?
Sometimes I find myself enjoying a horror movie or screaming in a haunted house. Nowadays in the Halloween season, people dress-up as a goblin, a monster, or a ghost, and enjoy scaring other people.
Come to think of it, for me, the really scary things are invisible, and might happen unexpectedly and ruin my life.
"What are they?", you might ask.
Getting old, disease? Losing family members in an accident or natural disaster?
(I know we can’t always avoid acts of God.)
I can’t say what the most scary thing is to me.
The only thing I can say is that whatever it is, the thing that could take away my dearest things like family, friends or pets, is the scariest.
The thought that I might lose what I care about really scares me.
But at the same time, that reminds me of what is most important in my life.
Thank you, MIAMI class, for giving us such a chance to think about what is scary (important) to us! Happy Halloween!
