There's a movie that many of my students have been talking about lately. It's called "Kokuho", which translates to "National Treasure." It came out recently and is a huge box office success here in Japan! I've heard it stars the famous actors Ryo Yoshizawa, Ryusei Yokohama, and Ken Watanabe, and it tells a powerful story about the world of Kabuki. The movie is so long that you could almost pack a bento box and have a full meal while watching it! I guess my students are very dedicated!
The story follows a young Kabuki actor who must decide between his personal dreams and the legacy of his family's celebrated Kabuki lineage. He learns to master his craft with incredible passion, but an old family secret threatens to tear everything apart. To protect his family, he must find a way to honor his own path while still finding a way to carry on a tradition that has been passed down for generations.
