We use "a" when we are talking about a general, non-specific noun that is singular. Think of it like picking one item from a large group. For example, if you say, "A dog is a good pet," you are talking about any dog in general. You can also say, "I want to buy a new car," because you don't have a specific car in mind yet.
We use "the" when we are talking about a specific noun. This means both you and the listener know exactly which one you are talking about. Here are a few ways this happens:
* When it's been mentioned before: "I saw a cat. The cat was sleeping on the sofa." (We know which cat now.)
* When there is only one: "The sun" or "the moon." There is only one sun, so it is specific.
* When the context makes it clear: "Can you open the window?" (We both know which window I mean).
