  2. align
  3. drill instructor
  4. wrinkle

  6. tornado

Attention to Detail
A big part of Navy bootcamp was learning to pay attention to detail. It was very difficult at first. For example we had to fold our clothes and put them on the shelf with the corners aligned perfectly. If they were off even 1cm, the drill instructor would get angry and throw your clothes across the room. The same went with our bed sheets. They had to be pulled tight and the corners had to be folded a certain way. If there was even one wrinkle, the drill instructor would yank off all your bed sheets and make you do it again.  I remember one day when we came back from lunch, everyone's clothes and bed sheets were thrown around the room. It looked like a tornado had been in our room.  We had 5 minutes to clean it up.

Are you ready for today's fantabulous English blog?

New words & phrases:
  1. military personnel
  2. standard
  3. civilian
  4. behavior
  5. pass out
  6. bad apple
  7. commit a crime
  8. instance
  9. cause trouble
  10. Yokosuka base
  11. personal development
  12. to be on one's best behavior
Let's get started!

Have you ever been to Yokosuka?

Whenever I mention Yokosuka to Japanese people, I often hear people say that it is a dangerous place because of the U.S. Navy base.  While the U.S. is more dangerous than Japan, when it comes to crime, Yokosuka is different.  Military personnel are held to a much higher standard than ordinary civilians.  That means that their behavior is much better. For example, one of my friends in the Navy once got drunk and passed out on a bench in Verny Park.  He got in big trouble and wasn't allowed to leave the ship for a month after that.

Of course, there is always one bad apple.  Sometimes you may have heard in the news about a Navy sailor committing a violent crime in Okinawa or Yokosuka.  This is very terrible, but there are only very few instances like these. When those things happened, EVERYONE on the base was punished. We were told that we had to help each other and make sure no one caused any trouble. I was so angry. I couldn't leave the base for a week, sometimes two!

U.S. sailors are taught HONOR, COURAGE, and COMMITMENT. When I was in the Navy, we often had training on personal development, and were told how important it was that we be on our best behavior in Japan.  I would trust a stranger on the Navy base, but never in my hometown.

So, if you have time, you should go to Yokosuka and enjoy a Yokosuka Navy Burger or some 海軍かれー!

Have a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful day!

New words & phrases:

  • potable water
  • equipment
  • shower head

Let's get started!
When I was in Navy Bootcamp,  we always had to hurry to do everything.  It was hard for me because I was a slow person.  We especially had to be quick when we took showers.  Actually, taking quick showers is very important on the ship because there isn't much water.  The ship actually has equipment to make potable water from seawater.  Anyway, in bootcamp there was a large room with 8 shower heads. Sixteen people would enter at a time. One person would step under the shower, get wet then step out of the shower while someone else  stepped in.  While waiting, the first person would them soap up and then step back in the shower while the second person stepped out to soap up.  The whole process took about 3 minutes.  Taking a shower for a long time was called a "Hollywood Shower".  Why Hollywood? I don't know. Maybe someone like Tom Cruise takes long showers.

How about you? How long do you take in the shower? 5 minutes? コメントを残してください。

Have a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful day!

Becoming the Leader

New words & phrases:
- Cryptology
- cadence
- nerd
- rigid
- ironic

Let's get started!

My home in Florida is close to a Navy base.  The base has a special school for Cryptology. I remember when I was about 19, lying in my bed in the early morning, I could hear the Navy people singing cadence as they went on their morning run....at 4 am.  I thought to myself that those people were crazy! In the afternoon, I would get on the bus to go to college.  The bus drove through the Navy base.  I remember seeing the Navy guys and thinking to myself, "What a bunch of nerds!" Their uniforms looked so uncool, they walked so straight and rigid, and their hair was cut so short. At that time, my hair was down past my shoulders, I woke up at 11am or later when I didn't have school, and the only exercise I got was when I was running to catch the bus.

About 10 years later I found myself on that base again.  This time, it was ME in the Navy, wearing the uniform, having the short haircut and LEADING the students out on a morning run at 4am. I became a Navy instructor at the school of Cryptology.  How ironic!

My Navy Life - One Week

New words & phrases:
- military
- the outside world
- unexpected
- stick it out

Let's get started!

Bootcamp is the word for basic military training.  It was 8 weeks long, and perhaps one of the most difficult things in my life.  Everyday, my instructors were yelling at me, and the training was so hard. Every morning we would wake up at 4 am, eat, exercise, study, fold our underwear, march, exercise, march, study, and sleep.  Then, wake up in the middle of the night for drills.

There were no days off, no breaks, no communication with the outside world. On the third day I thought I wanted to go home. I made a plan to jump over the fence and hop on a train home. However, I thought I should wait one week.  If I still felt the same after one week, I would run away and never come back.  But something unexpected happened.  I became stronger after one week, and so I decided to stick it out until the end.  It was the first step on my long journey in the U.S. Navy.
