#835 マイ先生の秘密：なぜフラミンゴはピンク色？

皆さん、こんにちは！今日は、私たちのマスコットであるマイ先生にまつわる、ちょっとした科学の秘密についてお話ししたいと思います。なぜフラミンゴはピンク色なのでしょうか？

Did you know that flamingos are not actually born pink? It turns out that they are born a dull white or gray! Their beautiful pink color comes entirely from their diet, specifically the small brine shrimp and blue-green algae they eat in the wetlands.

The pink comes from pigments called carotenoids that the birds absorb from their food. It’s the same type of pigment that makes carrots orange and tomatoes red! If a flamingo doesn't eat enough of the shrimp and algae, its feathers will eventually fade back to white. Mai must be eating very well!
