I love the amazing convenience of Japanese sweets and snacks, but I am always shocked by the amount of plastic packaging! You see a wrapper around each individual cookie, which sits in a plastic tray, which is inside yet another plastic bag. It seems like so much waste! This excessive wrapping is also common with fruits and vegetables. Did you know that Japan stands as one of the highest generators of plastic packaging waste per person, second only to the United States?
