Yesterday, we discussed the excessive plastic waste generated in Japan. The irony is that the store wants to make me pay a small fee for a plastic bag at the checkout. The idea is to encourage me to bring my own bag to protect the environment by reducing trash. It is a real paradox: the government wants to reduce waste on one hand, but the culture of perfect, safe packaging creates so much trash on the other hand. This makes it difficult to know the best way to support the environment.
