#781 赤ちゃんのへその緒

皆さん、こんにちは！昨日、クラスで日本の文化について、とても驚くべきことを生徒さんから教えてもらいました。

I was shocked to learn something new about Japanese culture in class yesterday. One of my students told me that it is a common tradition for Japanese mothers to save a piece of their baby's umbilical cord after they are born. I was completely in the dark about this! The cord is often kept in a special small wooden box as a symbol of the special bond between mother and child. It's a powerful and unique tradition that shows how much mothers care about their babies. I find it very beautiful.

(昨日、クラスで日本の文化について新しいことを知って、ショックを受けました。生徒さんの一人が、日本では母親が出産後に赤ちゃんのへその緒の一部を保存する伝統があると教えてくれたのです。私はこのことを全く知りませんでした！へその緒は、母と子の特別な絆の象徴として、よく専用の小さな木箱に保管されます。母親が赤ちゃんをどれほど大切に思っているかを示す、力強くユニークな伝統だと思います。とても美しいと感じました。)

After I heard that, I searched the internet and found that it turns out that this custom dates back to the Edo period! The small wooden box is often called an akō-bako, and it is a popular item to be given as a gift from a grandparent. I find it so interesting that something so small can have such a big meaning.

(その話を聞いた後、インターネットで調べてみたところ、この習慣は江戸時代にまでさかのぼることがわかりました！その小さな木箱は「垢箱」と呼ばれ、祖父母から贈られる人気の品です。こんな小さなものに、これほど大きな意味があるなんて、とても面白いと思います。)
